Heather Oelklaus
I
use many aspects of photography to create my art. I enjoy traditional
black and white, Polaroid SX-70 manipulation, infrared, linear strip
photography, long exposure night photography, and lightning photography.
Recently, I have been specializing in Polaroid transfers in extremely
limited editions. My images are best described, in general, as "conceptual"
and often "humorous".
I have created
images that challenge symbolic stereotypes and images that have
a whole meaning in itself while providing greater insight when pondered
further. The goal of my art is to embrace and articulate the roles
that media place on our society and contradict that fantasy with
a dash of reality. Many of the pieces were influenced from ads that
appeared in 1950¹s popular magazines.
These pieces
were made using the Polaroid emulsion lift process. The images were
exposed onto Polaroid film and then the film was submerged in hot
water causing the top layer to "lift" from the hard backing.
Once the delicate layer is free, I applied the tissue-like layer
to paper or an object. The artwork is finished with all archival
grade UV protecting products. Each of these pieces is a one-of-a-kind
original.
